Expectations can have a big impact on your perception of a location. After reading the fabulous reviews, my expectations soared. Although many didn't specify, the glowing reviews generally reference the Mansion portion of the hotel. The problem is we had expectations based on the Masion reviews, but stayed in the value priced external rooms. The problem is the rooms are significantly smaller and decorations nothing special. Definitely a significant drop from the mansion rooms. I couldn't help but feel disappointment. The rooms are likely worth the price I paid, but I was expecting more. The shower / toilet area was so small, the door could not be shut while sitting on the toilet. I would have probably felt better if I had just stumbled across this hotel without having read the reviews in advance. The staff was wonderful as expected. I immediatly requested an upgrade, but none were available. They offered to open the veranda and give me and my wife a glass of wine to enjoy, so they did what they could to make it right. However we decided to spend most of the evening in town, and reading in the beautiful common area. We spent minimal time in our room. As I said, the staff couldn't have been nicer, and the common areas are beautiful. The rooms are clean, the beds very comforable, but they are small with average decor. My recommendation is to get a mansion room if available. If you choose to stay in one of the basic rooms, dial down the expectations. You will likely not be disappointed with most aspects of your stay.

Glorietta Bay Inn met all our expectations for an anniversary outing to be remembered. We enjoyed an exceptionally quiet combined bedroom and sitting room (Lillie's Room) in the Spreckels' Mansion. It felt more like a cozy B&B than a hotel. Directly across the street from the Del, we strolled two blocks to dinner on the main street, and found the October weather warm enough to enjoy dining outdoors. A balmy afternoon was spent at the serene pool overlooking the bay...perhaps water could have been heated more? Each night before, we filled out a request for the breakfast of our choice and it was delivered to our room exactly at the specified hour, with hot food HOT and cold food COLD. They termed it a Continental Breakfast, but had a dozen good items to choose from including oatmeal, bagels, sliced fruit, etc. so I'd say it was more than that. There were two TVs, one in each space, plasma, no less with great reception. The staff were pleasant, and helpful. An afternoon lemonade & cookies break were a welcome addition, as well as tea, anytime we wanted. Pampered, is the word for it, and fun!

The staff was freindly and helpful. Mother's Day they gave us flowers. As we sat on the veranda Sunday night, the evening kitchen helper gave us fresh made cookies with our coffee. The Location was great, we could walk across the street and walk on the beach or go to the shops in the Del Coronado and we were able to walk to dinner every night.

The hotel was very nice. The staff was VERY accomodating. Our room was very roomy (Room 558), although staff told us it was one of the larger rooms in the inn (we were NOT in the main ""mansion"") We were very comfortable (there were 3 of us). We had 2 large beds, a kitchen area with micro. and refrig. and sink--along with dishes/flatware, etc), and a large bathroom area with 2 sinks. Plenty of room for us. They were very accomodating with us during our 5 night stay--provided wine glasses etc for us, as well as information on various area sites/tours etc. The location was great--not in the ""downtown area"", but in a pleasant area, easy access and right across from the ""Del"" (Hotel del Coronado), easy access to all local transporation (if needed), lots of restaurants etc. within walking distance as well as fantastic beach right across the street. Would definitely stay again.
