  • Strong Musty Smell on Clothes When You Return Home

Musty smell of resort room will stay with you for days when you return home. When we exited the elevator and started walking down the hall of the 2nd floor you could smell a strong musty odor (imagine the smell of a 20 year old hotel in Southern Florida on the ocean). When we got to the room it was even stronger. We tried opening the window, and turning on a ceiling fan which did not help. Room ** has a balcony but is over a roof, so you could not keep the window open at night, since it would be very easy for anyone on the second floor to “hop” over the balcony and into your room. We talked to many people staying at the resort who had the same problem. When I returned home and emptied my luggage my husband (who was not on the trip with me) said our laundry room smelled like a farmhouse that had been closed up for years. After 3 washings all my clothes still have a faint musty smell. Heads up that pool is not heated and was freezing. It was in the 50’s at night and 70’s during the day. Some hearty soles were standing at the swim up bar, but very few in the pool for the week. I had seen the complaints about noise but figured it wouldn’t be a big deal. If you have a room facing the courtyard, you will hear music blaring until 11:00. They have live musicians every night. Even with a white noise maker we could not block the sound out. Riu halls are always loud and at 7:00 every morning like clockwork you could hear doors slamming and people in the halls.

This hotel caters to Mexican locals. I have no idea what they pay for the rooms, but I get the feeling that I'm subsidizing a large portion of it. There were so many kids. Kids peeing the pool, kids pouring their daquiris in the pool, kids wasting foods, kids screaming,.. you get the idea. Feeding time (it sure wasn't dining) was pure mayhem. The hotel took the menu straight off of Golden Coral. Nothing wrong with Golden Corral, but we didn't expect it from a $*/night all inclusive place. It doesn't matter what drink you ordered, they all tasted the same... sugary. Everything we needed, from water, to shampoo, to someone come fix the TV, we had to ask three times. It was a running joke with our party for the week. They only gave us one ketchup packet of shampoo every other day. Cheapskates. Tipping was constant and exhausting. It's like everyone had a hand in your pocket. The front desk people and anyone else who was fluent in English all exhibited attitudes. Everyday was a hassle with the taxi drivers regarding the rates. It's a regulated charge based on zone, and the prices are clearly printed on a piece of paper that each cabbie has to have in his possession. We actually had a front desk person trying to "translate" for the taxi driver and take his side in telling us that the rate had doubled overnight when clearly it had not. We can read Spanish. Eventually we flagged down another cab and took it for the original rate, and the hotel clerk didn't even flinch. She gave the first taxi driver the "i tried" look. They have no shame. We thought that the cleaning staff were very nice, however. It's a tough job for them here.

We will NEVER AGAIN stay at a Riu hotel anywhere. My husband accidentally brushed by a ceramic UNSECURED statue/pillar which crashed to the floor. The hotel management threatened to call police and have us removed from the hotel if we did not pay $* USD. UNBELIEVABLE! In a foreign country! The piece was 6 feet tall two pieces and unsecured! after two days and a ruined trip for us and both out couple friends the awful hotel management said it would be $*USD. The piece was unstable and unsecured. We paid under diress fearful of the threats by management. We have no recourse, were given nothing but our credit card reciept, though we asked for documentation of the event and corporate contact info. Coming home and looking over more Riu reviews, it became obvious that this is a constant issue for this hotel!!! the Rui Jalisco next door has two reviews from last month with the same story! The BED was so uncomfortable it was hard to sleep- imagine sleeping on a tile floor w tile pillows, the hotel was at max capacity people everywhere!! A kid atually reached and put his finger in my plate to ask what i was eating! DISCUSTING, GROSS, NEVER STAY HERE or at any RIU AGAIN!

On the bright side - we stayed in a suite that was incredible. View from the room was breathtaking. Grounds were kept up constantly. Room was kept immaculate and other than the hard bed was very accomodating. The Hotel itself was very noisy inside and out and would start early in the morning til late at night. The bathroom situation needs to be fixed. You have to walk from the pool or from bar areas a fair pace to get to one. Staff was overworked but very friendly and willing to rectify any problem that might arise. At the restaurants that you made reservations to - the food was acceptable. Food on the buffets was sub-par except at the breakfast buffet. The buffets were a three ring circus. People acted like there was not enough food to feed everyone, pushing, cutting off, cutting in on! I have never been around that many rude people at one time in all my life. It was the same with the elevators. Too many wild kids and noise. I think that I would have to be short on money to stay at this location again.
